Matron of Honor’s Toast

As the maid of honor, I have the honor of sharing a few thoughts about the bride and groom. Are you two game for this….?

I’ll start with the lovely bride, my sister Jennifer. I have had the honor and joy of knowing Jennifer for all of her life and I can honestly say there are only a few people in this world that I love as much as I love my sister. Even when she came into my life when I was as a teenager and I lost five or six years of my precious teen age life to babysitting, I knew she was an amazing person. It has been so much fun to see her grow into the amazing young woman that she is today. I am so proud to stand here today and look at you – the best sister and friend that a person could ask for, and I know Brett will agree, a gorgeous bride to boot.

You have so many amazing qualities that have brought all of the people in this room here today to share in your moment… I admire how you can find or create beauty in everything you do and how much you of yourself you give to the people that you love.

Most of all, I love your sense of humor and ability to find something to laugh about in almost any situation – which we all know is a required quality for marrying Brett. So please join me in toasting Jennifer and wishing her a marriage filled with beauty, love and laughter.
And now for the groom. I am sure many of you have had the experience of meeting someone new and totally hitting it off and thinking “this is really a great guy”. That is totally NOT how it happened when I met Brett. As the big sister, I stand by my story that I was just doing my job being cautious and suspicious about this guy who popped into my sister’s life. And, in my own defense I have to say that Brett didn’t always do a lot to help his case. I think I had only met him once or twice when Jen called one day to ask if she and Brett could borrow my car for just a few hours to run down and pick up his car from someplace. About SIX hours later I get a phone call from the police to find out they have my baby sister sitting in the back of a police car. Apparently, Brett was trying to break into a locked gate with a wrench to get his car and the police weren’t buying his story about the having permission to get in there or about some access code that wasn’t working. On top of that, they were driving a car that didn’t belong to either one of them. That was only one example of many of my first interactions with Brett that just left me wondering “what is up with this guy?”

Many of you have probably heard Brett say that it took him about 3 years to realize that I actually liked him. In truth, it may have been even a LITTLE longer than that before I began to realize that Brett is the type of guy who really starts grows on you after five or six years. ?

Seriously, it has been really great to get to know you over the past seven and a half years and find out what a terrific guy you are. I am pleased to have you marrying my sister and I will happily claim you as a brother in law.

I found a wedding quote I thought was short and sweet and represents what I think marriage is really all about… “Choose your love, and love your choice. “

I want to toast Brett and be the first to officially welcome you into Jennifer’s family, a good enough reason on its own for a drink. Please join me in toasting Brett.

Hopefully I was worth a few years of babysitting 🙂 Seriously, the toast was truly fantastic and very touching. There are few people I will ever love as much as you. Thanks for all your help, love, and support… you’re the best sis a gal could ever have! Love you, Jen
